Australian cricket star Glenn Maxwell has added yet another bizarre and unfortunate entry to his list of accidents after sustaining a fractured arm during a net training mishap.
The 36-year-old all-rounder was bowling in the nets at Mount Maunganui when batsman Mitchell Owen ‘smoked a shot’ straight back at him, hitting him on the wrist and causing the fracture.
The injury has immediately ruled him out of this week's three-match T20 series in New Zealand, where he has been replaced in the squad by wicketkeeper-batter Josh Philippe.
This is the latest in a series of incidents to sideline the experienced player.
Maxwell previously suffered a fractured leg in 2022 when a friend fell on him during a 50th birthday party celebration.
Furthermore, he sustained a concussion after falling off a golf cart during the 2023 World Cup campaign.
Fellow all-rounder Matthew Short, who was batting in an adjoining net, witnessed the incident, telling cricket.com.au, “I saw Owen smoked it and then the aftermath.
It hit Maxi on the wrist.
It didn’t sound good.” Short quipped that Owen is “not the guy you want to be bowling to in T20 training that’s for sure,” highlighting the sheer power of the shot that caused the injury.
The Australian team will now have to adjust its line-up for the New Zealand series without one of its most dynamic players, once again proving that for Maxwell, training can sometimes be as dangerous as the match itself.
