Grimsby has been fined £20,000 by the English Football League for fielding an ineligible player, Clarke Oduor, during their League Cup victory against Manchester United.
The registration for Oduor, a Kenya defender on loan from Bradford, was submitted at 12:01 pm, a minute and 59 seconds after the 12:00 pm deadline.
The EFL chose to issue a fine rather than expel Grimsby or order a replay of the match.
Grimsby, who self-reported the breach, blamed a computer malfunction for the delay.
Ironically, Oduor was the only Grimsby player to miss a penalty in the shootout.
Grimsby accepted the fine, stating it was an honest mistake, and has since reviewed its procedures to prevent a repeat.
Manchester United has until Monday to appeal the decision.
