Netflix's latest true crime anthology series, 'Monster: The Ed Gein Story,' has brought renewed attention to the notorious Nazi war criminal Ilse Koch.
The drama, which follows the life of murderer Ed Gein, portrays him developing his morbid fascination after being exposed to Nazi atrocities, including reading a comic book titled 'The B of Buchenwald' about Koch.
Koch, whose husband commanded the Buchenwald concentration camp, earned the infamous nickname 'The B of Buchenwald' or 'Kommandeuse of Buchenwald' due to her horrific sadism.
She was reported to have physically abused prisoners with a riding crop and forced them into exhausting tasks for her entertainment.
Following WWII, she faced an Allied military tribunal in 1947, charged with prisoner abuse, including allegedly ordering the execution of tattooed prisoners to turn their skin into household items like lampshades, book covers, and gloves.
Although acquitted of the most grotesque crimes, she was convicted of prisoner mistreatment and sentenced to life.
She was briefly freed amid public outcry but rearrested by West German authorities for maltreating German nationals, eventually taking her own life in her prison cell in 1967.
