A new dinosaur species, Newtonsaurus cambrensis, was identified by University of Bristol palaeontologists from a fossil found in 1899 in Penarth, South Wales.
Using modern digital scanning, students created a 3D reconstruction of the fossilized jawbone, revealing it as a large predatory theropod from the Triassic period.
Named after Isaac Newton for its distinctiveness, the dinosaur’s 60cm jawbone suggests a 5-7m body length.
The discovery, made possible by photogrammetry, confirms unique dental features.
Curator Cindy Howells notes the potential for more finds in Wales’ rare Triassic beds, highlighting the value of historical specimens in modern research.
