With the 2025 wedding season concluding, wedding expert Tracey Mudd is warning newlyweds about the critical importance of updating their names on essential documents to avoid costly fines.
Mudd highlights that many couples, particularly the 56% of women who adopt their partner's surname, often overlook this crucial post-wedding 'wed-min' and can face fines of up to £1,000.
Key documents that must be updated as soon as possible include passports and driving licenses.
Failing to update a passport can lead to being denied boarding for flights, while not notifying the DVLA of a name change can result in a fine of up to £1,000 under the Road Traffic Act.
While not updating council tax records doesn't typically lead to a fine, it can cause issues with credit checks and loan applications.
Newlyweds who own a home also need to update the title with the Land Registry, a free process that prevents complications when selling or remortgaging.
Mudd advises prioritizing the updates, starting with core documents like driving licenses and passports, and then moving on to banks, credit card providers, and HMRC to avoid impacting credit scores.
She recommends requesting multiple original copies of the marriage certificate as many organizations require one for the update process.
