As air fryers become one of the most popular kitchen gadgets in the UK, safety experts have issued a warning about common mistakes that can pose a serious fire risk.
A recent survey revealed a lot of confusion over how to use them safely, with tens of thousands of people searching for answers to basic safety questions every month.
The experts shared five key errors to avoid.
Firstly, never use baking paper or tin foil to line the basket, as it can block airflow and potentially catch fire by getting caught in the heating element.
Instead, use silicone liners that fit correctly.
Secondly, do not put water or liquid inside the air fryer for cleaning, as this can cause a short circuit or fire if it touches the heating element.
It's safer to wash the basket by hand with washing-up liquid.
Thirdly, ensure there is at least 10cm of space around all sides of the appliance to prevent overheating and kitchen damage from the hot air and steam released from the vents.
Fourthly, only use oven-safe dishes made of glass, ceramic, or metal, as plastic can melt, release toxic fumes, and start a fire.
Finally, use very little oil and stick to types with a high smoke point, like vegetable or avocado oil.
Using too much oil or the wrong kind can create a build-up of grease that may catch fire.
By following these simple tips, users can enjoy the benefits of air fryers without putting themselves or their homes in danger.
