Canada has taken the significant step of designating the Bishnoi gang, a major criminal syndicate, as a terrorist entity, a move welcomed by groups like the World Sikh Organization, who note that criminal activities are at an 'unprecedented high' with countless businesses facing extortion and threats.
The gang is a sophisticated organisation with more than 700 members, according to India’s National Investigation Agency, involved in a wide range of illegal activities including drug trade, extortion of celebrities, and the smuggling of weapons to carry out assassinations.
Among the high-profile crimes the gang is accused of are the 2024 assassination of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar and the murder of Indian rapper Sidhu Moose Wala.
The Indian government has previously linked parts of the gang’s operations to the separatist movement and has demanded Canada arrest and extradite certain members.
This designation comes at a crucial time as Canada’s strained ties with India begin to thaw following the diplomatic crisis sparked by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s public accusation of Indian government involvement in Nijjar’s murder.
The move grants Canadian law enforcement stronger tools to confront the gang, which the World Sikh Organization called an 'important first step,' while also stressing the need to hold the 'true architects' of the violence to account.
The designation highlights Canada's commitment to combating transnational organized crime that threatens both national security and public safety.
