Canadian law enforcement has escalated its fight against organised crime by designating the Bishnoi gang as a terrorist entity, a significant move that comes as relations between Canada and India appear to be thawing.
The gang, accused of carrying out the assassination of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2024, is now a major focus of Canadian police.
The designation was welcomed by the World Sikh Organization, which noted that criminal activities, including countless businesses facing extortion and threats, are at an ‘unprecedented high.’ Under Canada’s criminal code, this new status makes it an offence to knowingly deal with property owned or controlled by the group or to provide property to benefit the group, equipping law enforcement with stronger tools.
The move is considered an ‘important first step,’ though the WSO stressed that the ‘true architects of this violence’ must also be held accountable.
India’s National Investigation Agency previously described the Bishnoi gang as a major criminal syndicate with over 700 members involved in illegal drug trade, extortion of celebrities, and the smuggling of weapons for assassinations.
The gang is accused of attempting to kill Mumbai politician Baba Siddique and sending death threats to Bollywood star Salman Khan.
Canada's step against the gang is particularly noteworthy as its ties with India had collapsed following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s public accusation of Indian government involvement in Nijjar’s murder, an allegation India denied.
The move against the gang signals a diplomatic opening in the previously fraught relationship.
