Hamas has offered a detailed, calculated response to President Donald Trump’s 20-point peace plan, stopping short of outright rejection and signalling a willingness to proceed on key terms, most notably the exchange of Israeli hostages.
The militant group confirmed it is ready to release all remaining 48 Israeli hostages, both living and dead, according to the exchange formula outlined in Trump’s proposal, contingent on meeting the 'field conditions for the exchange.' Furthermore, Hamas agreed to turn over the day-to-day responsibility of running Gaza—which it has controlled since 2007—to a Palestinian body of 'independents, technocrats based on Palestinian national consensus and Arab and Islamic support.' The statement welcomed the full withdrawal of Israel from the Gaza Strip, the immediate entry of aid, the rejection of the occupation of the Strip, and the rejection of the forcible displacement of Palestinian people.
The movement’s carefully crafted statement, thought to have been drafted with the help of mediators, appreciated the efforts of President Trump, calling for an end to the war.
However, the group crucially failed to agree to a key provision in the plan: the permanent disarmament of its militant wing.
A senior Hamas official told Al Jazeera that the group would not agree to disarm before the Israeli occupation of the enclave ends, though they would be willing to hand over their weapons to a future Palestinian body that runs Gaza.
The group affirmed its readiness to 'immediately enter through the mediators into negotiations to discuss the details,' putting the ball back in Israel’s court.
