Newly qualified nurses are reporting significant struggles in securing NHS jobs despite the health service facing staff shortages and spending billions on agency staff.
A petition created by Vicky Marie Adams has gained over 85,000 signatures, claiming that roles are often advertised for internal applicants only or require experience that newly qualified nurses haven't had the opportunity to gain.
The petition calls for a review of access to Band 5 roles and improvements to support into practice.
Meanwhile, NHS trusts in England spent £3 billion on temporary staff between 2020-2023, with the entire UK spending over £10 billion on temporary staff in 2022-23 alone.
The Royal College of Nursing analysis suggests this money could cover the salaries of 30,956 permanent full-time equivalent nurses.
The Department of Health and Social Care acknowledged the issue, stating NHS England is working with employers and universities to support graduates find roles as soon as possible, though they note improved retention rates mean employers are less able to over-recruit compared to previous years.
