In a truly unexpected crossover of sporting worlds, former Chelsea icon Gianfranco Zola has joined Europe’s Ryder Cup team in a surprise role for the upcoming tournament at Bethpage Black in New York.
The Italian, a staunch golfer who plays off a 1.5 handicap, was spotted in Team Europe’s official photograph and seen patrolling the course in New York City.
It has been revealed that Zola is serving as the designated on-course buggy driver for vice-captain Francesco Molinari, his long-time countryman and friend, having been invited into captain Luke Donald’s backroom team.
The news came as a complete surprise to players, including Chelsea fan Justin Rose, who admitted he was star-struck to find the Stamford Bridge hero, who played for the club between 1996 and 2003, as part of the setup.
Meanwhile, the team itself boasts formidable talent, including Jon Rahm, whose defection to LIV Golf drastically reduced his automatic qualification chances but was a likely captain’s pick due to his status as a key strike weapon.
Norwegian star Viktor Hovland, who has been selected for his third Ryder Cup, is back after forming a strong partnership with Shane Lowry in Rome.
The final pick ultimately went to Wyndham Clark, a New York native with experience at Bethpage Black and renowned putting ability, who was chosen ahead of the likes of Jordan Spied and Brooks Koepka.
The European side is looking to defend its title against the United States.
