Hopes for a dedicated tram link between Derby and Nottingham remain uncertain after East Midlands Mayor Claire Ward admitted she cannot promise the project will go ahead despite earlier optimism.
The proposed tram line had been touted as a key growth corridor that would improve connectivity and boost the regional economy.
However, Ward noted that other transport initiatives may take priority, including improvements to bus networks in areas currently underserved.
The Mayor emphasized that a £300,000 feasibility study is ongoing to assess multiple options, but no funds have been allocated for construction.
She stressed that while better links between the cities are desirable, people can already travel by train or bus, and resources may need to address communities where public transport is virtually nonexistent, particularly at night and on weekends.
The comments were made during the launch of the Inclusive Growth Commission’s report, which outlines ambitious plans to increase income levels for 30,000 low-paid workers and generate £1.4 billion in additional regional earnings over the next decade.
Critics have argued that without major infrastructure projects, such promises may be difficult to fulfill.
Supporters, however, say the Mayor’s pragmatic approach ensures money will be spent where it delivers the most benefit.
The uncertainty leaves residents waiting to see whether the long-discussed tram link will finally become a reality or remain another unfulfilled transport pledge.
