Rangers FC is facing an SPFL investigation into the use of smoke bombs by supporters at their opening William Hill Premiership game against Motherwell.
This latest incident follows a 20,000 euro fine levied by UEFA against the club for the use of pyro during a Champions League qualifying match last month against Club Brugge.
In a statement, the Ibrox club acknowledged the UEFA disciplinary case and the new threat of further action from the SPFL due to the behavior of its traveling fans.
The club warned that future incidents could directly weaken the club, with the risk of reduced ticket allocations and potential stand closures now 'very real.' Rangers FC also noted that the fines divert resources from other areas, further weakening the club's financial position.
The statement acknowledged that many supporters are frustrated and have requested that action be taken against the fans responsible.
The club is currently reviewing its next steps internally and plans to discuss the matter with fan groups and the fan advisory board to ensure a 'fair and responsible outcome.' The statement concluded by emphasizing that everyone wants the same thing: a strong Rangers backed by a support that reflects 'the very best of who we are and what we stand for.' The club is now actively working to address the issue in order to prevent future penalties.
