President Donald Trump has generated controversy by announcing a directive for Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to deploy federal troops to Portland, Oregon, a city he baselessly claimed was "War ravaged".
The President publicised the directive on Truth Social, adding that he was "also authorizing Full Force if necessary".
However, the move was met with immediate and stark opposition from Portland Mayor Keith Wilson, who issued a statement in response to the President’s demand.
Mayor Wilson unequivocally rejected the need for federal intervention, writing that while President Trump had directed all necessary troops to Portland, "The number of necessary troops is zero in Portland and any other American city".
Wilson's concerns align with those voiced previously about a heightened federal presence, especially near the ICE facility, suggesting Trump may be acting on earlier threats to use federal force against local protests.
This concern is echoed by a recent NPR-Ipsos poll, which found that only 35 percent of Americans overall agreed with allowing federal officers to make immigration-related stops with fewer restrictions.
