Approximately 150 research and development jobs are set to transfer from North Wales to Manchester as medical products and technology firm Convatec announces £500 million of UK investment.
The company will open a new flagship Manchester hub in 2027, with around 200 staff employed at the new site, largely transferring from the existing Deeside facility.
Convatec emphasises plans for further growth in subsequent years.
The Deeside R&D site has served as a major centre since opening in 1996, but Manchester is now viewed as the ideal location for the expanded facility given its vibrant life sciences ecosystem, including leading universities, hospitals and research institutions.
No redundancies are planned, with all relevant employees having the opportunity to transfer.
The move will be phased and not operational until 2027.
Convatec confirmed its manufacturing operation in Deeside will remain a cornerstone of global operations, with around 400 workers continuing employment at the site following the new R&D centre's opening.
Some R&D will remain in Deeside where close connection to manufacturing capability is beneficial.
The news provides a welcome boost for Britain's life sciences sector amid concerns about a shift to the US to offset President Donald Trump's trade tariffs.
Jonny Mason, interim chief executive at Convatec, stated the investment demonstrates unwavering commitment to advancing healthcare innovation.
UK Science and Technology Secretary Liz Kendall praised the landmark investment as proof of how UK-US collaboration benefits both countries, creating jobs, unlocking growth and improving patient lives.
