The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has scrapped its 'Africa Hometown initiative,' a project intended to foster exchanges between four Japanese cities and partner countries across Africa.
Akihiko Tanaka, the President of JICA, formally apologised at a news conference in Tokyo for the decision.
Tanaka explained that the initiative was being cancelled because "Misinformation about the project resulted in an excessive burden on the municipal governments" involved.
The apology underlines the administrative and logistical difficulties faced by the project's partners at the local level in Japan.
The initiative's goal was to promote cultural and practical exchanges, but the implementation appears to have been derailed by operational challenges and public communication issues.
By cancelling the project, JICA is attempting to alleviate the strain on the municipal governments which were struggling to cope with the unforeseen difficulties.
Tanaka reiterated his apology, signalling the agency’s recognition of the failure to execute the initiative successfully.
