The atmosphere in the Manhattan federal courtroom was tense as Sean Combs, once defiant, sat emotionless and still while Judge Arun Subramanian read out the 50-month sentence.
After the final judgment was delivered, the disgraced mogul turned to face his family, who had supported him throughout the trial, and appeared to mouth the heartbreaking words, 'I love you, I’m sorry,' marking a quiet moment following a chaotic trial.
The court, packed with over 30 family members and supporters, listened as several of Combs’ children came to the podium to plead for a light sentence, telling the judge they needed their father, with many supporters breaking into tears.
In contrast to his supporters, the victims themselves did not address the court, after one, a former assistant named Mia, pulled out following the defence writing a letter calling her a liar, a move the judge called 'inappropriate.' In lieu of their own statements, Judge Subramanian read aloud remarks from the victims’ testimony, telling Combs, 'These were serious offences that irreparably harmed two women.' Combs himself addressed the court for the first time since the beginning of his trial, breathing a large sigh before standing to read a plea for mercy.
He broke into tears as he turned to his mother, admitting, 'I failed you as a son,' and telling the court, 'I have nobody to blame but myself.' The judge, however, insisted that while he considered Combs' family ties, he had to take into account the damage caused to the victims, noting the crimes took place over a decade.
He ended his remarks by telling a dismayed Combs that there was 'light at the end of his jail sentence.'
