Amanda and David Weller, a couple from Devon, were pleasantly surprised after finding a toad with five legs at their Hammas Farm holiday let business.
The extra-limbed creature was described as 'very energetic' before it hopped away.
Herpetologist Andrew Gray confirmed that such a deformity is a rare find.
He explained that it could have been caused by environmental factors like pesticides, to which amphibians are particularly susceptible.
Another possibility is that the toad regenerated a new limb after its original leg bud was damaged.
The discovery highlights the potential impact of environmental contaminants on wildlife.
