Amelia Earhart’s long-lost Electra 10E, missing since her 1937 world flight attempt, may have been located in a Nikumaroro lagoon, with Purdue University researchers citing strong evidence.
The team plans a November expedition to retrieve an anomaly visible in 1938 photos, 400 miles southeast of Howland Island, where Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan aimed after departing Papua New Guinea on July 2.
They never arrived, likely crashing after running out of fuel.
President Trump’s declassification of Earhart files supports the effort.
Richard Pettigrew of the Archaeological Legacy Institute calls it a lifetime discovery, backed by The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery’s evidence pointing to Nikumaroro as their final destination.
Purdue, where Earhart worked, hopes to bring the plane home, fulfilling her plan to return it post-flight.
Despite skepticism from past searches, the team remains optimistic about confirming the wreckage as the smoking-gun proof of Earhart’s fate.
