A lawsuit filed by families of Israeli hostages captured in the October 7 massacre, seeking unspecified damages against the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and seven of its senior officials, has been allowed to proceed.
A judge ruled that neither the agency nor its officials were entitled to immunity from the suit.
The lawsuit alleges that UNRWA aided Hamas by 'permitting weapons storage and deployment centers in its schools and medical clinics and by employing Hamas members'.
UNRWA had previously called the lawsuit 'absurd' and argued in court filings that it was immune from liability as a subsidiary organ of the U.N..
The judge's decision follows a reversal of position by the Donald Trump administration, which had argued against the agency's immunity, contrasting with the previous Joe Biden administration's stance that the suit should be dismissed.
The decision was issued on Tuesday, but neither UNRWA nor the lawyers for the plaintiffs had immediately responded by Friday.
