The Israeli military announced that it has recovered the body of a hostage taken during the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel.
In a covert operation, forces retrieved the body of Ilan Weiss, 55, who was killed during the initial attack on Kibbutz Be'eri, one of the southern Israeli communities stormed by militants.
Weiss's wife and daughter were also taken hostage during the attack but were released in November 2023 as part of a temporary ceasefire and hostage exchange agreement.
The military also stated that its forensics lab was working to identify findings linked to another deceased hostage whose remains were recovered in the same operation; the family of that individual has been notified, but their name was not released.
The announcement provides a grim update on the status of the hostages, more than ten months after the attack that killed approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and saw 251 individuals taken captive.
The ensuing war in Gaza, launched by Israel in response, has killed more than 63,000 people in the Strip, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.
The recovery of Weiss's body brings the total number of hostages released in exchanges or other deals to 148, the number of bodies retrieved by Israeli forces to 50, and leaves 49 hostages still in captivity, of which the Israeli military believes 20 are still alive.
