The Israeli military announced on Friday that it had recovered the body of a hostage and the remains of another, both of whom were taken captive during the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023.
The body of Ilan Weiss, 55, who was killed during the attack on Kibbutz Be'eri, was recovered in a 'covert operation'.
Weiss's wife and daughter were also taken hostage but were released in November 2023 as part of a brief ceasefire agreement.
A forensics lab is working to identify the findings linked to the remains of the second deceased hostage, and the family has been notified.
This recovery brings the total number of bodies of hostages retrieved by Israeli forces to 50.
The military did not provide specific details about the operation.
The article provides a breakdown of the hostage numbers since the October 7 attack, which killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and resulted in 251 hostages being taken.
As of the report, 148 hostages have been released, 8 have been rescued alive, and 49 remain in captivity, with the military believing 20 of them are still alive.
The war that followed the attack has resulted in more than 63,000 deaths in Gaza, with the majority being women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.
