Overnight closures are set to begin on the A369 Portbury Hundred, a major highway connecting Portishead to Junction 19 of the M5 motorway and serving as a critical access route into Bristol.
The closures will be in effect for a period of three weeks to allow North Somerset Council to carry out essential resurfacing work.
The disruption is scheduled to take place between the hours of 21:00 BST and 05:00 BST daily, commencing on Monday and continuing until October 18, with the road reopening completely outside of these designated working times and throughout weekends.
The closure will encompass the entire length of the A369 Portbury Hundred, and drivers are being advised by North Somerset Council to prepare for possible travel disruption throughout the three-week period.
A council spokesperson emphasised that this project is ‘vital’ for the maintenance of the road network and is necessary to ‘improve safety for drivers.’ In addition to the main carriageway resurfacing, the comprehensive programme of works will include the repair or replacement of damaged ironworks and a much-needed upgrade to the highway drainage system.
The project will also involve a refresh of road markings and signage, along with the clearance of overgrown vegetation along the route.
Hannah Young, the Cabinet member for roads, stated that ‘These works are an investment in the future of our road network, ensuring safer journeys and a more resilient road infrastructure for North Somerset.’ Diversion routes will be clearly signposted for motorists, and traffic marshals will be stationed to assist local residents as needed during the overnight hours.
