Four fatalities have been confirmed in Arizona following heavy, short-burst rainfall that triggered devastating flooding, forcing some residents in rural areas onto their rooftops for safety.
The worst-hit area was Globe, one of Arizona’s oldest mining towns, a city of around 7,250 people.
Three of the victims were found in Globe—two in a vehicle and one in the floodwaters.
A fourth person was found dead near a vehicle caught in fast-moving floodwaters in suburban Phoenix.
Authorities, including emergency manager Carl Melford, stated that a 'massive search and rescue' operation is underway in Globe, with sheriffs officials investigating reports of potential missing persons.
The downtown area flooded rapidly, with one of the first affected areas being a propane tank distributor, resulting in approximately 1,000 residential-sized tanks being scattered throughout the community.
Melford confirmed that hazmat workers were sent to the scene, adding 'Luckily none of them ignited or exploded'.
Mayor Al Gameros declared an emergency, stating the flooding was unprecedented.
Officials are urging the public not to self-deploy to search for victims, as it could interfere with cadaver dogs.
Red Cross shelters have been opened, and the city is appealing for patience as operations continue.
