A dramatic incident unfolded on the M4 motorway on Sunday, 29 September 2025, when a motorist drove nine miles on the wrong carriageway, leading to a police arrest on suspicion of drink-driving.
Wiltshire Police were inundated with calls shortly after 04:30 BST when a Ford Fiesta was spotted travelling eastbound on the westbound carriageway near junction 17, Chippenham.
The dangerous journey, which covered a significant distance of the busy motorway, was eventually brought to an end when officers successfully tracked the vehicle to a McDonald's restaurant located on Bath Road.
A 63-year-old man was subsequently arrested at the scene for drink-driving offences.
He has since been released on bail as Wiltshire Police continue their investigations into the matter.
The force used the incident to issue a serious public safety warning, reminding motorists that legal limits on alcohol consumption while driving are in place explicitly to save lives.
They emphasised that consuming even one or two alcoholic drinks can severely impair a driver's ability to react, reducing both coordination and concentration—critical faculties required for safe road use.
This single arrest was part of a broader operation, as a force spokesperson revealed that officers had dealt with five separate suspected drink-drivers across the county throughout Saturday night, highlighting the continuing challenge of curbing such dangerous behaviour on UK roads.
